Ex-Celtic star Simon Donnelly kicks off about the simplicity of leasing through Intelligent Car Leasing

It’s not every day that a Scottish football legend drops by to the office. But luckily for us one did: former Celtic and Scotland midfielder Simon Donnelly called in to our Glasgow base to chat about his experience with Intelligent Car Leasing (ICL).

Simon is midway through a two-car four-year lease used by his wife and himself. He appreciated ICL’s personal touch to get them into exactly the right cars that suited their requirements.

“I’ve had a few cars in my time, but I’m not the most knowledgeable on cars,” explained Simon. “So, to pick up the phone and ask what kind of spec I needed in terms of size, what I would be using the car for and the sort of budget I had was important. ICL was at the end of the phone to advise me and then offer choices for a variety of cars I could then select. It was all very straightforward.”

Now Simon’s a complete convert to leasing and will be coming back in two years’ time for two more lease cars.

“I think for me the whole experience has been simplicity. I’ve done a lot of buying and selling of cars and all the stress that comes with that process. With leasing that all gets taken away.”

While he was visiting our ICL headquarters, we took the opportunity to show him three electric car choices which might tempt him for his next lease. But they could be yours right now if you’re in the market for a new EV, especially if it’s a company car. With the low tax rates, you may be able to get into a much bigger car than you might have imagined, and we’re on hand for plenty of advice.

BMW i5

Roomy and stylish, the BMW 5 Series is the classic executive car, and in its new eighth generation adds an all-electric version to the petrol and diesel mix.

It comes as a four-door saloon, or, if you have big loads, the classic Touring estate. As you might expect, there’s plenty of high-tech in the new i5 and all versions come with a self-parking function and two 5G mobile phone antennas for online services.

The eDrive40 i5 has a single, rear-mounted 335bhp motor and the longest range – up to 361 miles. All i5s can use ultra rapid chargers at up to 206 kW to top up with a useful 10 to 80 percent in around 30 minutes.

Polestar 2

Polestar is the electric car brand which came from Volvo, so all its models ooze Swedish design style. Rival to the Tesla Model 3, the Polestar 2 is an unmistakably premium hatchback which has been continually improved since it launched in 2020.

There are lots of options, such as a panoramic glass roof and even light ash wooden trim. Coming from Volvo, Polestar is big on safety and has three radar units, five cameras and 12 ultrasonic sensors to monitor the world around you.

Volkswagen ID.3

If you’d prefer something more compact, Volkswagen’s ID.3 is a real Tardis of a car; it’s slightly shorter than a Volkswagen Golf but thanks to the wheels being pushed out to the corners, a very short bonnet and a flat floor, it’s great for a tall family, and a light airy place to be in general.

The ID.3 was the first of VW’s all-electric family of cars, and last year it got a minor exterior restyle, better quality materials inside and an improved infotainment system. There are two battery sizes depending on how much range you need; the 58kWh battery for up to 270 miles, or  77kWh with a  356-mile range.

So what will be your choice of a new car leasing deal?
